Permobil, Inc. introduces the New Permolock, which allows users to drive while sitting in their wheelchairs.

The new Permolock is designed for use with the C400 and C500 power wheelchairs and must be installed by a certified NMEDA representative. The new Permolock features a Retractable Plunger (or pin), ease of installation and stability. The new Permolock allows users to drive while sitting in their wheelchairs. The Retractable Plunger is first on the market to provide better ground clearance and prevents damaging thresholds or carpet.

The system offers three release options: Electric-Control Button, Manual Release and Emergency Release Handle. The Permolock features a Vehicle Control Button, which is located on the dash of the vehicle. The Control Button uses three lights--red, amber and green--to inform the user whether or not the chair is locked into place. To unlock the wheelchair from the Locking Plate, simply press and hold the control button until the locking mechanism is released from the Locking Plate. The Locking Plate is an easy-to-install docking station that holds the chair firmly and securely in position. It is important to know that a user may ride in a Permobil C400 or C500 of appropriate configuration in a motor vehicle, when properly secured by both a Permolock wheelchair lockdown system and crash tested lap and shoulder belt, which is secured to the motor vehicle. A "crash tested lap belt" does not include the positioning belt attached to the wheelchair. The wheelchair belt is designed to position the user in the wheelchair during ordinary use. It is not designed to protect the user against injury while riding in the wheelchair in a vehicle. Users who pursue riding in or driving vehicles in their wheelchairs assume a great risk.
